Jim Bell

Jim Bell

Agency: Cruise Vacations
Email: jim@cruise-vacations.ca

First cruise was booked by a general travel agent in bunk beds on Holland America old Rotterdam in 1986. I knew there was a better way! We started our cruise business in 1994 as a franchise and evolved into our own brand and joined the Ensemble Travel Group consortium in 2002. As co-owner of Cruise Vacations along with my wife Karen, we have grown to become Winnipeg’s premier cruise only travel agency. I love to deliver top notch cruise experiences to folks that are delighted with their experience. One of my favorite times was in Costa Rica with a group of ranchers when we visited a cattle ranch and one of our guests showed the ranch owner how we “auction” cattle back in Canada. It was a gift to everyone that witnessed the “auction”. I have travelled to over 80 countries on upwards of 100 cruises. I have experienced virtually every cruise line ocean and many river lines. I know people tell me they would prefer to spend a month or two to fully immure themselves in a country, Truth be known they, never will. They don’t have what we all cherish. Time. I prefer to experience as much of the world as I can while I can. I really want to travel to India and the Amazon in my future experiences.

Agency: Cruise Vacations
Email: karen@cruise-vacations.ca

I've been in the cruise industry since 1994 but my very first cruise was a Trans-Atlantic sailing when I was only 2 1/2 years old aboard a Cunard ship. That was in an ocean liner though and not a cruise ship for those that know the difference. So far I've visited over 80 countries and have been on approximately 100 cruises. That number will go up though! My bucket list destination so far has been Antarctica but I can't name just one! The Galapagos, Africa, Europe and South America are right up there. My favorite thing about traveling is getting to experience all the new cultures and meeting new people besides having my bed made and wonderful meals prepared and served in fantastic places.

I have been an avid traveler for the past 20+ years and a Travel Advisor for 5 years. I also work hard to stay up to date on what is going on in the travel industry by attending frequent training sessions and seminars.

I have such a passion for sun & sand vacations, I love to help people live their dream.

I have traveled to 12 different Countries myself and have prepared amazing vacations to many others.

I honestly LIVE for vacation, there is nothing better then counting down the days to get on that plane! Well, except being there...

One of my most recent adventures: I did a Viking River Cruise on the beautiful Rhine River. My adventure started in Amsterdam, Netherlands and ended in Basel, Switzerland. I toured Amsterdam for a few days before stepping on the beautiful Viking Kvasir. Along the Rhine we made stops in Netherlands, France, Germany and finally Switzerland where I stayed with some locals for 5 days to enjoy the amazing Country. This was definitely an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget!

I go above and beyond for my customers, let me prove it to you! :) Let's plan your experience of a lifetime! :)

What is your favorite destination?
For me, nothing beats a Walt Disney World vacation with my husband and three kids!

What itinerary do you enjoy planning for clients?
I specialize in park touring plans and have first-hand knowledge of almost all of the Walt Disney Resort properties, and good neighbor properties, as well. I love planning Disney vacations of any sort for my clients and their families, but Walt Disney World Florida is my absolute favorite itinerary to plan.

What was your most memorable travel experience?
One of my most memorable travel experiences also took place in Orlando at Sea World's Discovery Cove. The theme park has a stunning beach resort theme and I was blown away by the beauty and by how relaxing it actually was. The dolphin encounter was more immersive than I had imagined and was a memorable experience, but there is so much more to do in this park. You could spend an entire day there and still want to go back again. Oh, and as far as quick-service theme park food goes, this is the best!

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
Years ago, three generations of my family took a two-week vacation together on a Royal Caribbean Cruise to the Panama Canal. The trip was a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and we made priceless memories!

What hotel could you revisit over and over again?
The Four Seasons Walt Disney World is my favorite resort. The resort itself is a destination. The restaurants are fantastic and the views of the Disney Parks are the best in all of Orlando.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
I can not wait to cross an adventure through India off my bucket list!

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
...take my family on a National Geographic cruise to the Galápagos Islands.

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
A fully charged phone and a backup battery to charge my electronic devices.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Two entirely different experiences come to mind when I think of my favorite meal while traveling. One of my favorite cities to visit is Portland, Oregon. My husband and I have had so many delicious meals while there. My favorite was Mother's Bistro. Each month, this restaurant chooses a different local mother's recipe of a traditional home-cooked favorite and features it on their menu along with the story behind the woman and the meal she chose. Everything is cooked from scratch and the restaurant is decorated to look like a cozy home. My other favorite experience was the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue that my family and I went to on our last Disney vacation. The dinner show is a memory our family often looks back on with great affection, and we can't wait to do it again!

We dined at Arzak, a fabulous and intimate restaurant where the chef personally came around to check on all the guests. What is your favorite destination?
Right now I’m all about Portugal, since I recently had a fabulous trip there with my husband. It’s a land of very diverse landscape, friendly and helpful people, and fabulous food and wine - all at an exceptional value.

What itinerary do you enjoy planning for clients?
I love planning Costa Rica for families! It’s an amazing destination for all ages, with an abundance of exotic wildlife and adventure, a wide variety of price points and great infrastructure. I also love planning trips to French and Spanish-speaking countries for clients, since I speak those languages.

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
One of my favorite trips was when I went on safari in Botswana. We were lucky enough to be able to spend some time with some of the local !Kung people in the Kalahari desert, who showed us how they gather roots and collect precious water, as well as a traditional trance dance. Many of their traditional ways are disappearing, so I really treasure that experience.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
Namibia, Bhutan, Patagonia, Antarctica, New Zealand.

What was the most memorable/best unplanned event that happened to you while traveling?
I lived in Switzerland with my family for a year. After the dairy cows spend all summer grazing in Alpine meadows, the farmers bring them down from the mountains on foot. It’s an event that takes place all over Switzerland called the Désalpe; some places have festivals around it and put in on the calendar, but in many cases, it’s really just for the farmers themselves, and they do it when they feel the time is right. They dress up in traditional outfits and festoon the cows with gorgeous crowns of flowers and herd them for miles down into the valleys below. When my mother visited, I took her to one of the most beautiful places in the world, the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Not knowing in advance it was going to happen, my mother and I just happened upon the Désalpe, which was wonderful in and of itself, but with a backdrop of Alps and waterfalls, it was like a scene out of Eden.

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
Travel round the world, of course! I would go to both old favorites and new places I’ve never been. I love a “perfect blend” of cities and nature, more rustic/authentic and luxury, sight-seeing/active and relaxation. My dream trip would include a safari, fantastic meals with stunning views, and a fully-staffed chartered luxury sailboat - but also plenty of opportunities for interaction with local people and cultures.

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
I’ve really become a big fan of my Kindle Paperwhite. It holds books (obviously), but I can also email relevant articles and documents to it, including my itinerary and a copy of my passport. I can borrow e-books from the library even while traveling.

What travel tips do you always like to share with your clients?
Find out what sights and museums tend to sell out or have long lines - and get tickets in advance! If that’s not possible, there are always tricks to minimize waiting. Schedule downtime as part of the day, preferably the late afternoon - this is especially important for families. A little time back in the hotel room goes a long way to extending sight-seeing energy and good moods. And, of course, be flexible! Even mishaps can yield unexpected wonderful experiences with the right attitude.

What is your favorite destination?
I might be biased as I lived there for over a year, but Spain is easily my favorite. There is such a variety of landscape, culture and language within the country that the experiences are endless.

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
I visited Ha Noi for a friend’s wedding. Viet Nam was so different from anywhere I’d ever been—the chaos of traffic, the jumble of electrical wires, and the crowds of people sitting on impossibly tiny stools! Above all, I was able to be a part of a traditional wedding ceremony—I’ve never felt so out of place but welcome at the same time.

What city could you revisit over and over again?
Melbourne, Australia. I lived there for two and a half years and was never bored once. The city is always putting something unique on for the public, whether it be a street festival, interactive art installation, or outdoor activity. There is so much greenspace that I never felt trapped in a city, and for the times I did want to venture out, gorgeous beaches, vineyards, and mountains were only just an hour away.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
Pyramids of Egypt, northern lights in Norway, and South America.

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
An audiobook—it’s the best to fall asleep to on long plane rides

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Chicken pastilla in Morocco. Like a sweet and savory pie: pulled spiced chicken with roasted almonds baked in phyllo dough, topped with a dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon, then garnished with mint leaves and strawberries. Along with a glass of iced Moroccan tea, it went down a treat!

Any “words of wisdom” you’ve learned along the way?
Plan enough to make time for the things you want to do most, but be flexible to make room for unanticipated experiences…you never know what opportunities will present themselves as you go!

Probably Udon Thani, Thailand. I love the night market.

What hotel could you revisit over and over again?
The Fairlawns in Johannesburg. The grounds are so beautiful.

An amazing five-course dinner at The Terrace at Fairlawns for Valentine's Day. Second most memorable would probably be the time I ate fried lamb brains in Florence.

What is your favorite destination?
My next one!

What was your most memorable travel experience?
Six months after our first encounter, my soon-to-be husband and I quit our jobs, sold our homes and businesses and went on a trip around the world for a year- Europe, Africa, India, Asia and Australia. I knew I had met my match!

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
I’ve been lucky enough to have visited over 145 countries on all seven continents, plus an additional 50 territories; including the Gobi, Sahara, Atacama, Mojave and Sonora deserts; the Nile, Amazon, Yangtze, Danube and Mississippi rivers; the Alps, Andes, Himalayas, Rockies, Pyrenees and Dolomites.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
I have 48 countries left in the world to visit! Next ones include: Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Mauritius; and Suriname.

What culture/experience surprised you?
Mongolia. I love the people, culture, landscape and food.

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
Take a chartered Gulfstream V with friends and family and head to the Caribbean to visit the small islands of the BWVI.

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
Plastic baggies, flashlight and iPod.

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever packed for a trip?
I always take my own mosquito netting when traveling to malaria regions.

What is your favorite destination?
Italy. I can almost point to any spot on a map of Italy blindfolded and have a wonderful vacation.

What itinerary do you enjoy planning for clients?
I like to include at least one place that’s a bit off the beaten tourist track and one to linger long enough to feel at home. These invariably wind up being the favorite parts of the trip.

What was your best travel experience?
For fourteen years, I planned, organized and accompanied group trips for Rabbi Sherwin Wine. They were all amazing because he was able to synthesize and communicate history, geography and sociology in a truly unique way.

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
Outside of Jodhpur, India, we stayed in a luxurious tented camel camp and rode a jeep on trackless dessert to meet people living so simply that if the modern world as we know it were destroyed, they would probably not be affected. This was the city that had it “all” - the best fort, temple and shopping we experienced in three weeks in India.

What country could you revisit over and over?
Israel. There is so much history there per square foot, it’s almost like peeling away an onion. The diversity of climate, topography and people in such a tiny land always surprises and delights me..

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
Croatia and Panama.

What was the most memorable event that happened to you while traveling?
On our last day at a Caribbean resort, I was enjoying a swim. There was a guest nearby and we struck up a very interesting conversation that somehow lasted for almost two hours. She finally mentioned that she hated flying although she had to fly a lot for work. I asked what she did and she said she had a TV show. I said I didn’t watch much TV, but what was it called. She said “Judge Judy.” I asked if it was shown in Detroit. I didn’t have a clue!!

What culture/experience surprised you?
I discovered in India that most of life there occurs outdoors, in the street. Therefore, it is a great advantage, to see it all at eye level, from a car, rather than from the height of a tour bus, looking down from sealed windows. I would encourage clients to travel with private guides and drivers, which are quite reasonably priced instead of with a group tour.

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
Go everywhere by private jet!

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
A comfortable pair of ballet flats for walking even when I’m “dressed up.”

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever packed for a trip?
For a month-long student trip to Greece many years ago: a beach chair and attached umbrella. I must have thought we would be on the moon and there’d be no stores.

What was your most memorable purchase while traveling?
A chess board of inlaid marble alternating with other exotic colored stones purchased from the artisan in Florence.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
We took a “culinary cruise” on the S.S. France when its restaurant had two Michelin stars. Craig Claiborn and Pierre Franey gave daily cooking lessons and every night beluga caviar was ladled from a silver tureen until you told them to stop.

Any "words of wisdom" you’ve learned along the way?
I saw a sign once that said “if you can afford to fly business class and you don’t…your heirs will.” The truth is that everyone arrives at the same destination simultaneously. The main difference is when your vacation starts…before or after the flight.

What travel tips do you like to share with your clients?
I urge them to learn the basic local customs and observe them. For example, in most of Europe you should greet a shop clerk and say goodbye when leaving. Ask permission to browse. A restaurant bill will not be presented until it’s requested, etc.

What was your most memorable travel experience?
South Africa. It offers so many wonderful experiences; a meaningful history; extraordinary natural sights; thrilling game park adventures seeking out “The Big Five”; Cape Town, which is a very cosmopolitan city in a beautiful natural setting; wonderful hotels; and great food and wine. All of these wrapped up in one trip made it truly memorable.

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
Myanmar.

What hotel could you revisit over and over again?
The One & Only Hotel in Cape Town.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
A river cruise on the Mekong River, Laos, Greenland and Iceland.

What culture surprised you?
Vietnam. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. And, the culture and history was extremely fascinating and interesting.

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
Go to Paris!

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
A wooden, hand-painted back scratcher from China.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Dinner at M on the Bund in Shanghai overlooking all of Pudong and remembering my first visit when the area was just a rice paddy.

What travel tips do you like to share with your clients?
Allow this travel experience to broaden your horizons. Be open to new experiences. Count to 10 and try to adjust when something goes wrong, as this will generally happen at least once on a trip. Relax and enjoy!

What is your favorite destination?
Of the places that I’ve been, Ireland is a favorite. There is so much history there and the people are warm and friendly.

What itinerary do you enjoy planning for clients?
I love planning cruising for families. I particularly like cruises out of New York City and trips to Alaska.

What was your most memorable travel experience?
My wife and I recently did a 10-day trip to Scotland and Ireland. Although we don’t totally agree, I really enjoyed Ireland while my wife liked Scotland (I think she is a bit biased because her family is from there).

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
Visiting the Campbell Castle in Inveraray, Scotland was very cool. My wife’s grandmother was a Campbell so it is was fun to visit the “family” castle.

What city could you revisit over and over again?
San Francisco, CA. We have relatives there but there are always new things to see and do in that area.

What’s on your travel "wish list"?
Rome, Greece, Africa, Machu Picchu.

What was the most memorable event that happened to you while traveling?
I was attending business meetings aboard the QM2 of the Cunard line as we travelled from Southampton to New York. Every day at 3:00 pm we had tea and scones in the Queen’s Ballroom. The main attraction during this time was ballroom dancing. The ladies were dressed to the nines and seated at the edge of the ballroom. The gentlemen hosts would come by, scoop them up and dance to the tunes that were playing. It was so elegant and the dancing was superb. We loved watching them and wish that we had the skill to join them. 3:00 tea became the highlight of the day.

What culture/experience surprised you?
The Irish culture and people surprised me greatly. While visiting, my whole understanding of the potato famine in the 1800’s and how it affected the Irish people dramatically changed. What I was taught was totally wrong. I now understand why the Irish migrated to the United States and how grateful that they were for the opportunity to relocate. I have a great respect for the Irish. We learned this as a part of a CIE bus tour. Our guide provided so much content to the trip greatly enhancing the experience.

If I had an unlimited budget, I'd...
Go on a world cruise

When traveling, what can’t you leave home without?
Gotta have my swim trunks. You never know when the opportunity to sit poolside will pop up.

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever packed for a trip?
A fishing pole. Once a year I like to take a trip into Northern Canada for a long weekend of fishing in an area that is outside of cellphones, TV’s and technology, in general.

What was your most memorable purchase while traveling?
Opal rings made by local Indians in the Southwest.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Perhaps not the best meal but the most memorable meal was Haggis in Scotland. Not bad really, but definitely different. The meal starting with a song celebrating the Haggis.

Any "words of wisdom" you’ve learned along the way?
Be sure to take time to relax. Too often, we overpack each day and miss the real meaning of vacation which is to relax and enjoy the people that we are with while at amazing destinations.

What travel tips do you like to share with your clients?
Get there early so that you are not rushed and have plenty of time. The last thing that I want you to do is to start a trip stressed out. It sets a bad tone for the vacation.

I guess animals are memorable for me! Being on safari with my kids in South Africa, riding on an elephant with my twin sister in Thailand, and bathing an elephant in Chitwan National Park, Nepal!

What is the most interesting/exotic locale you’ve visited?
India. Standing in front of the Taj Mahal was breathtaking. An experience I will never forget.

What city could you revisit over and over again?
Paris. Each arrondissement has something different to offer. With the fabulous food, wine, architecture, shopping and museums, you really can’t go wrong in Paris! I especially love walking around at night.

What’s on your travel "wish list"?
Scandinavia, Australia, Turkey, Tahiti.

What was your most memorable purchase while traveling?
A two-sided blackware drinking vase from a local Mapuche artisan near Villarrica, Chile. We drank “mate” while he shared stories and showed me his pottery.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Two meals always come to mind- While in Bangkok, our guide brought us to a local “restaurant” (ie- stove on a street corner!) where I had the best ever Pad Thai! What was your most memorable travel experience?
A week in Orlando at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. It was a great family vacation with my husband Dennis, my son Kyle, my daughter-in-law Stephanie, and my daughter Nicole. We stayed on-site at the newly renovated Virtuoso property, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. There is so much to do both day and night in the parks, featuring Harry Potter attractions and Hogwarts Express train, along with Minion Mayhem. City Walk has a lot to offer including a fabulous Blue Man Group show. My husband and I even got treated to a wonderful anniversary dinner from Kyle, Stephanie, and Nicole at the delicious Portofino Bay Hotel's on-site restaurant, Bice. That beautiful family time will always be a great lifetime memory.

What city could you revisit over and over again?
Sedona. There is something special about the red rock mountains and the feeling of a whole different place. I never tire of exploring the paths along the red rocks or the forests all around. There is a rejuvenation that is experienced with each visit.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
An extensive African safari, Australia and New Zealand.

Any “words of wisdom” you’ve learned along the way?

What was your most memorable travel experience?
Watching a herd of giraffes walk across the horizon as the sun set in the distance over the South African plains.

What cities could you revisit over and over again?
Paris. I could spend a weekend in each arrondissement just eating and exploring. New York City. I love the energy and vibe the city has to offer.

What’s on your travel “wish list”?
Chile and Argentina. From the cities to the vineyards to the penguins in Patagonia.

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d…
Go to Astronaut training school at the NASTAR Center and travel into space on the Virgin Atlantic.

What was your most memorable meal while traveling?
Stopping for dinner at a small restaurant in the town of Albuferia, on Southern Portugal's Algarve coast. I ordered the Cataplana, a local seafood and vegetable stew, cooked and served in a copper “clamshell” pot. Even though I was charged for extra bread and butter, I had to soak up and consume all of the delicious sauce.

Any “words of wisdom” you’ve learned along the way?
Always read and reconfirm your itinerary, especially the spelling of your names and double check the dates on your actual tickets. Traveling to Paris from Lyon on a morning commuter train (with family and bags in tow), and finding out you don’t have a seat because your tickets were for the previous day is not a good way to start the morning.

Traveling and exploring the world has always been a passion of mine. I have had the fortune of exploring most of North America, Europe, the Caribbean and parts of Mexico and Central America. I love the thrill of the journey and the excitement of waking up in a new place I can call home for a few days. I enjoy immersing myself in local culture, while exploring the "nooks and cranny's" of a new city or country.

Prior to launching B Smart Travel, I traveled across the US and Canada for business. While that may seem exciting on the surface, business travel brings a different level of challenge to the term "customer service". My personal experiences and expertise is what I offer to business travelers.

My other passion is health and well being. I am an avid runner and triathlete, and I have competed in many different race events in the US, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. I have a wonderful global network of friends and acquaintances to call on to provide healthy lifestyle travel destination guidance to those that are looking for a more active vacation experience.

My passion for traveling to new and exotic places is what motivates me to help others fulfill their own travel dreams and desires. I look forward to assisting you or your group with your next vacation or business trip and to helping you check off a few travel "bucket list" destinations!

I caught the travel bug from my parents very early. We traveled my home state, California, from border to border taking in all that the Golden State has to offer. through the years I have been fortunate enough to visit many states, including Hawaii and Alaska. I've traveled Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and even The Cook Islands. My two favorite destinations are Hawaii and Disney. Being from the West Coast, I have been fortunate enough to visit Hawaii a few times. I have both flown and cruised to our 50th state and just can’t get enough! My other favorite, some might say obsession, is Disney. My family is definitely a Disney family. Disneyland or Walt Disney World, we love them both!!! There is always a Disney visit on our calendar!I take great pleasure and care in making travel arrangements for my clients in hopes that they make lasting memories with their families in whichever destination they choose.

We’ve all heard the expression, “Life is short.” This sentiment guides everything I do in my personal and professional lives.

After all, we can never know today what tomorrow will bring so making the most of every minute is paramount. For me, that means fulfilling my travel dreams and helping others do the same.

How do I stand out from other travel agents? I’ve built a network of connections with tour guides and travel agents throughout the world, these friendships are essential to tracking down the best options on flights, accommodations, and excursions.

I also offer extensive research skills, as well as the ability to customize vacations to each client’s individual needs.

I love to make people happy and will do everything in my power to help you have a great experience. That means the willingness to go the extra mile to answer any questions and concerns along the way to the vacation of your dreams.

I have journeyed all over the world from my hometown in Southern Alberta:

  • Australia, the Cook Islands, Hawaii
  • Vietnam
  • Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece
  • Costa Rica
  • all over Canada

One of my most memorable trips was several weeks spent in Costa Rica, where we drove coast to coast across the country and stayed in a jungle ecolodge. Whether you are ready for a jungle adventure or relaxing cruise, I’m here to help you make the most of any trip.

If you are ready to make your own plans for what’s next, I hope to hear from you soon.
